Kotagede, Mataram Kingdom

Kotagede is a silent witness of the rise of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom that ruled almost the entire Java. The cemetery of Islamic Mataram Kingdom forefathers, the fort’s ruins, and the other historical remains can be found in Kotagede.n the 8th century, the area of Mataram (now is known as Yogyakarta) was the center of Old Mataram Kingdom that ruled the entire Java. This kingdom had an extraordinary prosperity and civilization, so it had the ability to build ancient temples with an extravagant architecture, such as Prambanan Temple and Borobudur Temple. However, in the 10th century, with an unknown reason, the kingdom moved the center of the government to East Java area. The great numbers of citizens left Mataram and gradually this area became a woodland or forest.
Six centuries later, Java was ruled by The Sultanate of Pajang which is centered in Central Java. Sultan Hadiwijaya, who ruled in that time, gave Alas Mentaok (Mentaok Forest), which was very large in area, to Ki Gede Pemanahan for his achievement in defeating the enemy of kingdom. Ki Gede Pemanahan with all of his family and followers moved to Alas Mentaok, a forest that used to be the Old Mataram Kingdom.

Kotagede, Yogyakarta

Initially, Kota Gede is a city which is the capital of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom. Next Kesunanan kingdom split into the Sultanate of Surakarta and Yogyakarta.Kotagede portion of Sub Area is part of the former City Kotagede plus the surrounding areas. While other parts of the former town located in the subdistrict Kotagede Banguntapan, Bantul regency. Such conditions are sometimes difficult to build Kotagede in the context of the community as a former City has a sociological and anthropological unity. Until now the former City Kotagede society in everyday social activities are still very solid in that unity. Development by the government's difficulties arise when handling carried out by government stakeholders at the city of Yogyakarta and Bantul. Yogyakarta City Government is only able to touch the former City Kotagede that are in the city of Yogyakarta. Similarly, Bantul regency government can only enter meneyentuh Bantul region. These people realize the solidity of a union territory as inseparable as the first boundary Kotagede City area still exists. Former Regional Municipality Kotagede must be handled by two different government units. In the context of regional autonomy today, when the authority of district and city level are relatively large, more and felt how they should deal with 2 (two) different policy for a whole region. One example of problems that can immediately be seen or felt by the public is when it comes to the handling of heritage areas. Government of Yogyakarta City and Bantul Regency has different priorities. So people should Koatagede or more often interact with the Government of Yogyakarta Special Province.
As the old town of the former royal capital, a city of heritage Kotagede Town (heritage) that very potential for the prosperity of society. However, zoning constraints of government will continue to be problems that were never discussed in the level of political will, unless the community wants.
This area is known for its silver handicrafts which lies along the road till T-junction ex-Packaging Palace Cinemas. In addition there are also in Kotagede Graveyard of Mataram Kings, among others, the tomb of former Panembahan Senopati (founder of Mataram). But then the tomb of the Kings of Mataram then transferred to the regions Hanyokrokusumo Imogiri by Sultan Agung (king of Mataram, which attacks Batavia).
Traditional atmosphere still deeply felt in this city, for example, looks at Kota Gede Agung Mosque Complex which still feels like the environment of the Palace, where berelief complete with a stone fence around the mosque, a large courtyard where there are several Kecik sapodilla tree, and a large, old Bedug very old, as old as the Great Mosque Kotagede own.
When out of the Kings Tomb Complex we will be greeted by a festive Kotagede Market which is always crowded every day. But you will find an atmosphere of another when you come to Market Kotagede in Javanese calendar showing when the market / day Legi. Kotagede market will grow crowded and congested by both sellers and buyers, even the market area may be increased until the front of the Post Office / TK ABA. Therefore, by most residents Kotagede, this market is better known as Pasar Legi.
